On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was immediately declared by David Ben Gurion, after the British ended their occupation of Palestine. The British took control of that land when World War I ended in 1918. They relinquished their claim, in part, in response to the horror the Jews suffered through at the hands of the Nazis during World War II, as well as The Balfour Declaration (“Balfour’s promise” in Arabic). It was a public pledge by Britain in 1917 declaring its aim to establish “a national home for the Jewish people” in a region geographically called Palestine.
During World War II, the Jews lost everything, family members, property, homes, money and were left homeless and destitute. They had nowhere to go and were once again wondering.
Six million or more Jews were murdered, leaving the ones behind frightened, but determined to live. Once they were given Israel, the Jewish people swore they would never be defenseless again. “Never Again” became their policy, their mission and they will always carry it out.
Hamas is an Arabic acronym for the Islamic Resistance Movement. Originating in 1987, after the beginning of the first Palestinian uprising against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Under its charter, it is committed to the destruction of Israel. Over the last week Hamas has been attacking Israel and has fired over 2000 rockets into Israel over the last 2-3 days.
This isn’t the first time.
In 2019, Hamas fired over 600 rockets, or about 50 rockets a month, into Israel, killing men, women and children. The media won’t give that much airtime, but the second Israel retaliates, it becomes headline news, and we are told how wrong Israel is. Israel is surrounded by enemies and is constantly dealing with attacks, but it’s wrong of them to defend themselves, they are called “bullies” or worse by the media and others.
Nowhere are Jews safe from attack – “The 2019 ADL Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, issued today, found that the total number of antisemitic incidents in 2019 increased 12 percent over the previous year, with a disturbing 56 percent increase in assaults. The audit found there were, on average, as many as six antisemitic incidents in the U.S. for each day in the calendar year – the highest level of antisemitic activity ever recorded by ADL.”
At what point will people stop blaming Israel for defending itself and start holding the terrorists who constantly attack them accountable?
If any other country began launching 50 rockets a month into the US killing our citizens, would we sit back and do nothing? Or would we do just as Israel is doing, and defend our citizens by any means necessary?
Would we not defend ourselves just because some people feel we should try to negotiate an end to the violence?
No, we wouldn’t, nor should Israel.
There is nothing wrong with Israel defending itself with every weapon available in their arsenal. We should demand our president stand up and declare our full and unconditional support of Israel and its actions and call on Hamas to immediately cease its attack.
