Do you plan on running for elected office in 2022? You are eligible to file beginning February 23, 2021. If you are planning to run you should start that process now, especially if you are a Republican.
Democrats in Frederick County will have financial help, volunteers and donations through the Frederick County Teachers Association, Maryland State Teachers Association PAC and many others. Republican candidates will not benefit from that type of support unless they are seeking higher office.
To get a better understanding on how the process works it would be helpful to you and your campaign to start by contacting local Republican and Conservative Clubs for assistance. Many members of our local clubs have run for elected office.
Here in Frederick we have the Frederick County Conservative Club, Republican Club of Frederick County, Republican Women of Frederick County and the Frederick County Republican Central Committee. The Maryland Republican Party also has resources listed on their website as does the Maryland Federation of Republican Women.
Our Central Committee has historically been unhelpful to candidates unless they fit a particular acceptable blueprint or are seeking a State or National office. They lean toward established politicians who can self-fund. Even though the Central Committee’s mission is supposed to be getting Republican’s elected to office, the Central Committee here in Frederick picks and chooses who it will assist.
Some offices on the ballot for 2022:
State: Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, State Senators and State Delegates
Frederick County: County Executive, County Council, Sheriff, Clerk of the Court, Register of Wills, Board of Education and Central Committee.
A complete list of offices should be linked on the Frederick County Board of Elections page.
From the Frederick County Board of Elections:
Tuesday, February 23, 2021 is the first day for an individual to file as a candidate for the June 28, 2022 Primary Election. Under State law, an individual must file a Certificate of Candidacy; the filing location depends on the office sought. All federal and state candidates file a Certificate of Candidacy at the State Board of Elections (SBE), located at 151 West Street, Annapolis, MD. Local candidates in Frederick County file at the Frederick County Board of Elections, located at 340A Montevue Lane, Frederick, MD.
In addition to filing the Certificate of Candidacy, all candidates must pay a filing fee at the appropriate board of elections. State and local candidates must also provide evidence that the candidate has filed a financial disclosure statement and established a candidate committee at SBE.
Due to COVID-19, the Board’s office remains closed to the public, so the Frederick County Board of Elections is asking that candidates open their campaign committee online at the state’s web site at https://campaignfinance.maryland.gov/ prior to making an appointment to file their candidacy in person at the Board’s office. Candidates can make an appointment for filing by emailing electionboard@frederickcountymd.gov or leaving a message at 301-600-VOTE (8683).
The 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, and the 2022 Gubernatorial General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Additional election-related dates and forms are available at www.elections.maryland.gov. For more information, contact the Frederick County Board of Elections at 301-600-VOTE (8683) or the State Board of Elections at 1-800-222-VOTE (8683) or www.elections.maryland.gov or www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/Elections.
