Anyone who doubts that Barack Obama has a sense of humor should take a look at his endorsement of Joe Biden for president of the United States. Really, it’s a skilled performance, and delivered, mirabile dictu, with a straight face. Give it a try. Seriously, go grab a mirror and put on your best sincere expression and say out loud, “Joe Biden would bring ‘leadership guided by knowledge and experience, honesty and humility, empathy and grace’ to the Capital.”
Did you bust out laughing? Of course you did. How could you not? After all Obama did say “knowledge and experience, honesty and humility, empathy and grace.”
I don’t blame President Obama for saying that he put his ‘good friend’ Joe in charge of the ‘recovery act’ that was supposed to rescue the country after the assault of the 2008 recession. I’d want to pass off responsibility for that too – it was the most lackluster recovery in American history. ‘Joe gets stuff done,’ said Obama. But when it really comes down to it, what has he ever gotten done — apart from enriching himself and his family, of course?
Obama packed a lot of disingenuous comments into his endorsement, but none more than his claim that good ole Joe ‘helped prevent the Ebola epidemic from becoming the type of pandemic we’re seeing now.’ WHAT?!?!? There were 11 cases of Ebola in the US in 2014, it wasn’t an epidemic but a minor health scare. The coronavirus, by contrast, is more like the seasonal flu. The number of cases would have been far higher had Trump not had the good sense to cancel all flights from China. An action that Biden slammed as ‘fear-mongering’ and xenophobic.
That’s okay because even President Trump found the endorsement amusing. In return he ended up tweeting a meme showing former President Barack Obama squirming uncomfortably as he and a group of guys watch Joe Biden talking about kids jumping in his lap. I love it, I couldn’t make this stuff up!
