Canary in the Coal Mine

Joe Charlebois

Recent troubling events have taken place on all levels of government that have been anything but transparent. Government agencies are keeping the general public in the dark, or denying access to information regarding the potential impact of infectious diseases on the U.S. populace caused by refusing vaccinations and illegal immigration.

Now the perfect storm is forming which will set up the United States for disease outbreaks on a level not seen since the introduction of national vaccination programs. This storm is comprised of slow action by treatment facilities in adopting protocols for foreign travelers who report illness; by unfettered immigration from Central America and Mexico; and opposition to vaccinations – and even political correctness.

Diseases re-emerging in the United States include measles, mumps, rubella, and whooping cough. These diseases were all but eradicated over the last half century through aggressive vaccination programs. Then came the influence of celebrities and other noteworthy spokespeople with an anti-vaccine propaganda campaign that used flimsy evidence linking vaccines with conditions like autism. The results have been devastating. Cases of all these diseases have risen sharply in recent years and there is no sign that their numbers will decrease anytime soon.

The dramatic influx of foreigners, primarily illegal immigrants from Central America and Mexico where these diseases along with tuberculosis are prevalent, has done nothing but put a strain on the U.S. healthcare system and epidemiologists. It isn’t coincidence that we see these “childhood” diseases on the rise throughout the country as illegal immigrants have made their way to every state in the nation. Even the illegal immigrants who have been detained receive no real health screening. The only issue arises if they admit to being ill.

The powers that be that promote illegal immigration have been so blinded by the potential unlimited power of increasing their voting bloc as well as the corporate interests who want cheap labor to increase profits could care less about the consequences of their actions.

Because of the potential backlash against the administration and corporate interests, the president won’t allow the truth to be revealed. This lack of transparency by the federal government under the guise of privacy has resulted in economic and health-related dilemmas that the states were not prepared for when the influx of approximately 100,000 unaccompanied “minors” were spread throughout the country. Governors and their individual health departments are now left unprepared for the coming crises.

The “canary in a coal mine” refers to the primitive but effective warning system that miners used to verify if dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and methane were present. While underground the miners would carry with them a caged canary. If the bird stopped singing or perished the miners would immediately take action.

The outbreak of all these diseases is our voiceless canary. We need to act now before the canary doesn’t wake. Illegal immigration needs to be stopped and vaccines need to given at a higher rate than currently given otherwise many will needlessly die.
