Do Yourself A Favor! Educate Yourself!

Michael Barnes

More and more I am seeing something that doesn't seem to be a right-wing mantra, but a repetitive noise, like a stuck record needle, coming from the left side of the political aisle.

There seems to be a group of people, most of whom tend to be self-affirmed Democrats, who seem to have an unconscious need to inject their misunderstood opinions of the 2000 election results into their small-minded, ill-educated diatribes against anything remotely resembling "conservative."

I saw it in the California debates.

I see it in the weak-minded rants regarding Gov. Robert Ehrlich.

Heck, I even see it in The Tentacle columns about our local politicians.

Does anyone else see this mentality as anything but self defeating?

Don't these so-called "progressives" realize that the American people, especially those of us who actually understand the Constitution, are increasingly turned off by what comes across as bitter, sore loser attitudes?

I am, by no stretch of the imagination, an ardent supporter of the current administration, and I look forward to a healthy, decent election next year, but every time I think I hear one of the candidates start making some sense and appealing to me, they have to go and stick the proverbial foot in the mouth and mention the 2000 election.

One has to ask the question: If Al Gore had managed to hijack the Constitution, hold the ideals of our republic hostage and instill himself in the White House as he and his band of miscreants tried, would we still have the same outcry of the few, yet vociferous, left?

I don't think so.

What we have is a group of people who aren't dedicated to preserving and maintaining our federal system of government. Instead we have a group that simply desires the power to set policy.

Am I saying that the Republicans are free from the disease that seems to affect so many Democrats?

My answer: a resounding "NO!"

The current administration has shown nothing but a desire to further its own agenda, conveniently forgetting that certain civil liberties, guaranteed rights, are inherent in being U.S. citizens, by trampling willy-nilly over the Bill of Rights.

I just ask that those of you who are even remotely interested in staying a free nation ruled by many people, not a petty few, exercise your RESPONSIBILITY as a citizen and educate yourself on political and electoral matters.

You owe it to yourself, your families and your country.
