Our Last Thanksgiving
This should be America’s last official Thanksgiving celebration. After all, George Washington’s tribute to the “providence of Almighty God” with “a day of public thanks-giving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness” rings somewhat hollow some 223 years later.
God may not be dead in America, but the Almighty is dead to America. Not to say that there isn’t a great deal of true-believers throughout the United States – there are – it’s just that secularists have been so successful in eliminating God in every part of our lives that even the First Amendment has been irreparably harmed through recent legislation while Americans stand by and proudly applaud it!
A day of thanksgiving was and is still intended to be our one day we as a nation come together and thank the Almighty with all of our hearts for the benevolence he has bestowed upon us.
After all these years of “separation of church and state” doctrine being used against the religious members of our society, a great number of Americans have softened. They have turned on those holding sincere religious beliefs. They now stand by and allow the local state and federal governments dictate to those of faith how they are allowed to worship, and that the church must be subservient to the almighty state.
The progressive left has done significant damage to the church even as they receive tremendous support from many religious organizations. How have they done this?
They have done this through eliminating the traditional role of the church in society. The state has made it more and more difficult to provide necessary services to the poor and needy. Through regulation and legislation, the state has targeted the church as a backward, misogynistic and bigoted organization.
The church, and many like-minded businesses which believe that they shouldn't be forced to support that which is in direct violation of doctrine, are being made to just do that. Just this week Oklahoma City based Hobby Lobby – which provides a healthcare plan with contraceptive care – was denied a waiver to exclude the so-called morning after pill and other abortifacients. The company is a privately owned family company which believes that "the foundation of our business has been, and will continue to be strong values, and honoring the Lord in a manner consistent with Biblical principles." In fact, each of the nearly 600 stores are closed on Sundays.
Based on religious grounds, there are those who continue to believe in traditional marriage; they believe that use of contraception and other forms of birth control and abortion are immoral. These same people, which just 20 years ago were the norm, are now being targeted as bigoted and hateful.
In fact you can't disagree or hold a contrary view without repercussions. In October Dr. Angela McCaskill, the chief diversity officer of Gallaudet University, was put on administrative leave because she signed a petition to send to referendum a ballot initiative to overturn same-sex marriage legislations.
She was dismissed because she was a Christian, who exercised her right as a citizen to join in what turned out to be a politically incorrect democratic process.
As time goes on, this nation will become more and more intolerant of those who believe. Christians are already becoming an unprotected minority as we have seen with Chick fil-A and Hobby Lobby.
I enjoyed this Thanksgiving with family. My father-in-law, as usual, put the day in perspective with a wondrous blessing of thanks to the Lord as we all stood together with heads bowed.
Next year, since there is no room left in America for the Almighty, we as a nation shouldn't keep up the charade.
