Marines Become Expeditionary Cops
As reported by Julie Watson for the Associated Press on July 22, The United States Marine Corps is activating three battalions of police specialist units; roughly 1,500 men are involved in new duties and capabilities.
In the past these units have provided force protection for battle infrastructure, controlled traffic, and they kept the Marines’ peace internally. Now they constitute a large rapid deployment unit charged with police work such as investigation of terrorism incidents, intelligence gathering functions, and training up the “friendys” as had the Green Berets during “Vietnamization.”
Taken on its own merits, this may seem a fairly logical adaptation for “the few and the proud;” but are they simply preparing for potential missions per some new Pentagon-strategized contingency planning, or it this some signal for the future of U.S. foreign policy?
And who could have imagined that the American military posture under President Barack Obama would become the polar opposite of that of Republican candidate Dr. Ron Paul? Under this scenario, the over-waxed term “World’s Policeman” takes on a whole new scope, and other uses of the new military police units become more ominous.
When one creates a capability, typically one finds a circumstance to demonstrate it. Or at least practice!
So, is the signal here that we expect to become more forward-leaning overseas, even as budgetary pressures would suggest the opposite? Even though American experience in Iraq and Afghanistan would suggest the opposite?
The AP article continues:
“The battalions will be capable of helping control civil disturbances, handling detainees, carrying out forensic work, and using biometrics to identify suspects.”
Again, with the utmost respect for our Marines’ storied history and tradition, what about the potential for deployment back at home; from Camp Pendleton to a neighborhood near you?
This potential is most disturbing when considered in light of campaign promises from Obama 2008. The creation of what amounted to the 1930s German “Brown Shirts” by then-candidate Obama.
He promised additional domestic police presence “Just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded as the U.S. Armed Forces.” ….and who better to train them?
Think that’s far-out or paranoid?
The U.S. Army commissioned a white paper on this exact subject. The Rand Corporation, a prominent think-tank, produced “A Stability Police Force for the United States: Justification and Options for Creating U.S. Capabilities” in 2009.
That control of an unruly United States population is under constant consideration has been leaked by members of Congress and the white-shirt military for years. “Continuity of Government” programs have taken on a whole new meaning since its’ Cold War counterpart that was originally designed to reconstitute America after some decapitating first strike.
The government must survive at all costs! This seems logical, especially in a nation that acts as if the people live to serve their government.
And, of course, with the infrastructure of our nation eminently easy to compromise due to an undeniable encroaching utter reliance on a digital transmission grid, cell towers, and the like, it would be easier than ever to disrupt the economic engine that had been America.
This eventuality is, of course, a possibility from a concerted EMP attack, or militarized virus, Trojan horse malware, or other future-threat.
That said, this administration has acted in a polarizing fashion, encouraging class-warfare, the one percent vs. the 99 percenters, the “haves pitted against the have-nots,” the evil rich, the evil coal industry, etc., despite claims of the opposite. Claims of supporting a “middle-class” seem the most absurd at this pre-election 2012 marker!
And remember, success based upon risk-taking and investment is diminished as in “you didn’t do that for yourself…”
All signs are that this administration, more than any prior, has determined that future enemies of the state lie within.
I am hoping to be wrong, and am certainly not faulting The Marines, who are “just following orders.”
