Learn From History, Or Repeat It!

David 'Kip' Koontz

One might wonder with all that is going on with regards to terrorism and President Bush’s war on it, if it may be possible for some to get confused as to who are the "good guys" and who are the "bad guys."

Let’s take a look!

Terrorists: Supposed leader is the spoiled son of a powerful politician from an extremely wealthy oil family.

U.S. Government: Supposed leader is the spoiled son of a powerful politician from an extremely wealthy oil family.

Terrorists: Supposed leader declared a holy war ("Jihad") against his ‘enemies’; believes any nation that is not with him is against him; believes God is on his side and that any means are justified.

U.S. Government: Supposed leader has declared a holy war ("Crusade") against his enemies; believes any nation that is not with him is against him; believes God is on his side and that any means are justified.

Terrorists: Supported by extreme fundamentalist religious leaders who preach hatred, intolerance, subjugation of women and persecution of non-believers.

Terrorists: Leadership was not elected by a majority of the people in a free and fair democratic election.

Terrorists: Kill thousands of innocent civilians, some of them children, in bombing attacks.

U.S. Government: Kill thousands of innocent civilians, some of them children in bombing raids.

Terrorists: Operates through clandestine organization (al Qaida) with agents in many countries; that use bombings and assassinations among other tactics as their mode of operation.

U.S. Government: Operates through clandestine organization (The CIA) with agents in many countries; that use bombings and assassinations among other tactics as their mode of operation.

Terrorists: Supposed leader has extensive financial ties to some of the companies that the supposed leader of the U. S. government does. U.S. Government: Supposed leader is heavily invested in U. S. biochemical companies.

Terrorists: Using war as a pretext to clamp down on dissent and undermine civil liberties.

U.S. Government: Using war as a pretext to clamp down on dissent and undermine civil liberties.

Basically, as this administration pushes headstrong into a conflict with Iraq while nothing is yet completed with al Qaida and Osama Bin Laden, is it not possible for some to view this matter through a completely different perceptual screen, that doesn’t make it as easy as it does for some to know exactly who is "right" and "who" is wrong?

Wouldn’t it be safe to say that some in the world would equate many of the actions of the U.S. government, now and in its past, with the behavior of those we now oppose?

While no American should accept what happened to us on September 11, 2001, we should also not be blind to the fact that the U. S. does indeed act at times in the interest of only itself.

History has borne that out.

It is the hope of some that this administration will stop charging forward with the desire to "go it alone" if need be, while many of us are afraid that - to the world - all this will accomplish is to lead to more comparisons that feed the fuel of hatred some feel toward the U.S. in the first place.
