Scientific ‘Desertation’

Norman M. Covert

Science has suffered an undeserved black eye from university professors claiming to be scientists. The sun is shining the light of truth on heralded evidence accepted by many climatologists concluding that the earth is warming. The data has been exposed as not founded on hard and fast rules of scientific discovery.

Political/scientific quackery and flackery appears to be the basis for the multi-trillion dollar climate change extortion.

The claimed “scientific consensus” can now be called what it is, a criminal effort by a coterie of white collar thugs to subjugate the world. These wolves in smocks eschewed weapons of mass destruction. The quest for world domination by such notables as Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Josef Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Adolph Hitler, and Osama bin Laden pales in comparison.

Ask for an invitation to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick if you want to know how science works. Science took a quantum leap forward at wartime Camp Detrick, where modern scientific endeavor remains a fact of life.

Charles Haas headed a committee of The National Academy of Science’s Research Council which came to Frederick last September. Its mission was to assess health and safety risks of the high containment laboratories of USAMRIID and the National Interagency Biodefense Campus (NIBC) under construction at Fort Detrick.

If you were privy to the opening session of the committee’s fact finding trip, you saw its multi-discipline members overwhelmed and confused by the scope of science, the facilities and the unique safety infrastructure of Fort Detrick and USAMRIID.

The committee took a giant leap in its understanding of the science of safety in the laboratory despite the crocodile tears and other theatrics of a few local conspiracy activists. Education was to be had for the asking.

Science at Fort Detrick is peer reviewed and vulnerable to unannounced review. The committee also learned there has never been a community health problem in Frederick as a result of research at Fort Detrick. Not even Area B’s environmental problems can be found guilty of causing external harm, despite some claims to the contrary.

Similarly, allegations against the late USAMRIID scientist Dr. Bruce Ivins (R.I.P.) amount to a straw grasped by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which needs to find the infamous anthrax letter bomber. They must look elsewhere to find this would-be killer.

The list of faux science principles in the Global Warming fiasco includes Prof. Phil Jones, head of the Climate Research Unit (CRU), University of East Anglia in England, and Prof. Michael Mann, of Pennsylvania State University, both of whom bared their nefarious work in emails. Each institution says it is investigating the charges of academic fraud.

We cannot overlook Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Prof. Martin Parry, co-chair of the IPCC working group which prepared part of the seminal Global Climate Change (GCC) document containing so many flaws.

Co-conspirators in the climate fraud may include Gavin Schmidt of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, as well as Kevin Trenberth of the U. S. National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado.

Communications among the principles above indicate they achieved their temperature data by guess and by gosh. Result of the collaboration was Mann’s now infamous “Hockey Stick” graph, which supposedly proved we are headed for global catastrophe. However, the numbers are fantasy at best.

The original data was destroyed, they say, urging us to believe the temperatures they recorded could be true. The computer model said it was. Such a computer predicted we would be out of harm’s way in last Saturday’s snow storm, which left us with about six inches of Global Warming residue. So much for modeling!

By contrast, Fort Detrick demonstrates science works for the betterment of man, an extension of its programs centered on the needs of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard personnel.

Dr. Ira Baldwin brought the nation’s finest scientific minds to Frederick in 1943. They developed laboratory facilities unlike anything the world had ever seen. He established the system of scientific checks and balances that remains the industry standard excepting Professors Jones, Mann, et al.

What are the criteria for scientific protocols at Fort Detrick? In general terms, consideration must identify a need, a medical threat, plus an hypothesis of an expected outcome for treating and preventing disease. In-depth review is a regular part of the life of any protocol following the grueling procedure to achieve funding.

A rigorous procedure is required to obtain animals as research subjects. An application must describe in elaborate detail every aspect of the research, the role of the animal subjects, their humane treatment and what is expected to be achieved. A committee composed of scientific and non-scientific members challenges every aspect of the request. Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and sound scientific results are the ultimate goals of the Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

The use of human volunteer subjects in research requires the most stringent of reviews by the Human Use Committees and local authorities. It requires adherence to a hosts of federal laws and directives.

It can require as many as 10 years to earn approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a candidate experimental vaccine. The effort may produce numerous peer reviewed articles. Camp and Fort Detrick scientists and technical specialists wrote more than 2,000 unclassified peer reviewed articles from 1943-1969. The number has grown exponentially and most are available for review.

It is unfortunate that so many continue to be under the spell of Global Warming. It is a crime to have created “facts” out of reverie. The IPCC plagiarized speculation that claimed without basis that cataclysmic events would occur in the coming decades. Not the least of which was destruction of rain forests in Central America; plus melting of the glacier spanning the heights of the Himalayas by the year 2035. The claims are now admitted fabrications.

Professor Jones maintains some of his work was peer reviewed. However, the announced reviewers were non-scientific operatives of the World Wildlife Fund, an advocacy organization.

Consider former vice president and Nobel laureate Al Gore, whose movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” is about to be relegated to the dustbin of motion picture history. Reality has destroyed key conclusions in the production.

Science? Fort Detrick knows a thing or two about it, and the Global Climate Change data isn’t science.
